Großglockner - Highest mountain of Austria

The Großglockner (Great Bell), with 12,460 ft / 3,798 m above sea level, is the roof of Austria and the highest mountain in the Alps east of the Brenner Pass.

It is located in the Hohe Tauern National Park. It has a pyramidal shape and its usual ascent route offers more difficulties than most other alpine peaks.

At about 11,322 ft / 3,451 m, in Adlersruhe (Rest of the Eagle), is the refuge Erzherzog-Johann, from where you find a climb with slopes of around 38 degrees and which, even in late summer, are covered with ice. But the effort is worthwhile. Before your eyes will unfold a landscape of valleys and lakes, three thousanders, forests, waterfalls and glaciers, including the longest in Austria, the Pasterze.

What else is there
The Hohe Tauern National Park is the home of many natural jewels. It is the largest in Central Europe and remains untouched, proudly displaying landscapes of breathtaking beauty. Including the Krimmi waterfall and the Rauris forest in addition to an Alpine road, the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, which has opened to everyone the chance to admire these wonderful places, previously reserved exclusively for seasoned mountaineers. If you have time, drive it by car or motorbike and if you have strength, do it on a bicycle. On the way you will find visitor centers, exhibitions and information points that allow you to learn more about the native flora and fauna as well as that you can walk the hiking trails in protected areas and observe the alpine animals.

Notes
To climb the Großglockner without high mountain ski equipment, the season from mid-July to late August is recommended.
