Kumano Kodo - Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountains

The ancient pilgrimage routes of the Kii Mountains reflect the Japanese spiritual culture, offering the possibility to taste the local rural wealth, far from the big cities of the country and its busy movement. Majestic mountains, lush forests, unique temples and countless incredible landscapes are woven into each of these legendary paths. The set of routes "Kiji", "Kohechi", "Iseji", "Koyasan" and "Yoshino" were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.

The first runs along the west coast of the peninsula to Tanabe, where it is divided in the ways of "Nakahechi" and "Ohechi". "Kohechi" going from north to south, from Koyasan to Kumano Sanzan. The "Iseji" route linking the Ise Shrine with the one of Kumano-Sanzan. The alternative called "Koyasan", begins on Mount Koya, where you'll find around fifty temples in a beautiful forest at 1,000 m / 3,300 ft above sea level. And finally, the "Yoshino" route starts at the homonymous Mount ending in Kumano.

To add this MOSTPOINT to your profile you must complete any of the three longest routes, or "Iseji", "Yoshino" or "Koyasan".

What else is there
Depending on the route you choose you´ll enjoy one or the other of incredibly beautiful landscapes. Among the wonders that are in the area you'll find the impressive Gorge Doro in the Yoshino Kumano National Park, stunning rock formations such as the Castle of the Demons or Shishi-iwa and Semmai Maruyama, the prolific rice fields.

Notes
As these are pilgrimage routes, you should seriously follow the rules: not to introduce animals or plants into the region, not deviate from your route, be careful with fire, littering and do smile, deepening your relationship with others through the legendary spirit that permeates the area.
