Matterhorn - A classic peak of the Alps

Matterhorn - A classic peak of the Alps

One of the classics of mountaineering. The Italians call it Monte Cervino and the  Francophones Mont Cervin but its more popular name is in German: Matterhorn which comes from the words "matte" (meadow) and "horn" (horn). And it is precisely this pyramid shape emerging like a pole of nearly 4,478 m / 14,692 ft  high, which has earned him not only the recognition of an emblematic peak for all climbers and mountaineers of the world, but it is also being considered one of the most beautiful mountains on earth. It is a difficult summit not only because of the inclination of its steep slopes but also because being isolated it suffers extreme weather changes. It has two summits: Italian (4,476.4 m / 14,685.5 ft) and Swiss (4,477.5 m / 14,688.3 ft) and its four sides point to the cardinal points. The route of Italian ascent (Crest Lion) is harder than the Swiss (Arista Hörnli), but all involve difficulties and this MOSTPOINT is reserved only for mountaineers with a good physical and technical preparation as it is one of the mountains with a major death rate.

What else is there
Do not miss the rösti prepared in the refuge at the mythical edge Hörnli (Hörnlihutte SAC 3,260 m). At the foot of the Matterhorn on the Swiss side you have one of the most famous ski resorts in the country, Zermatt, which shares some areas with Breuil-Cervinia, located on the Italian side.

Notes
The Matterhorn climbing season is from July to mid-September.
