Point Zéro France

Point Zéro is the starting point for the national roads, “Routes Nationales”, in  France. It is located in Paris on the square in front of the famous Notre-Dame cathedral, Place du Parvis Notre-Dame. Distances between Paris and other cities are measured from this point. It  is marked with a round stone and a bronze star in the middle. In honor of Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005, the square has officially been renamed from September 3, 2006 and now has the name Parvis Notre-Dame - Place Jean Paul II.

We like to clarify that many think that Km 0 correspond to the geographical center of the country but this really has nothing to do with it. They mark the beginning of the national roads in some countries although in others they can be used for the railways.

What else is there
On the small island in the centre of Paris, Ile de la Cite, is already quite a bit to see. Under the Place du Parvis Notre-Dame is a historic crypt with statues, including Charlemagne, foundations of ancient churches and a residence of the Parisi; Palais de Justice, the Conciergerie and the Sainte Chapelle; Pont de L'Archevêché, the narrowest bridge of Paris and the bridge of the love locks; Ile Saint Louis, an oasis in the busy center of Paris; further in the city of light are of course an unmentionable amount of sights to enjoy.

Notes
Did you know that the habit of signaling "Km 0" comes from the Romans? We have to go back to Emperor Augustus (63 BC - 14 AD) to look for a column in the "Miliarium Aureum" (Golden Milestone) which was made the starting point of all roads of his empire. Even today you can see the remains of it in the Roman Forum. This is where is the famous phrase "All roads lead to Rome" comes from.
